China launches 5-year plan to combat childhood obesity, myopia, and mental health issues with school-based interventions and screenings.
China has launched a five-year national action plan targeting childhood obesity, myopia, mental health, spinal curvature, and dental issues.
Issued by the National Health Commission and 12 other agencies, it aims for at least 60% of students to meet national fitness standards by 2030.
The plan mandates prenatal weight management, school-based physical education and nutrition programs, at least two hours of daily physical activity, and regular health screenings.
Myopia reduction goals include keeping rates among 6-year-olds near 3% and lowering them in older students through improved lighting, reduced screen time, and increased outdoor activity.
Mental health services will expand with school-based educators and annual awareness efforts.
Spinal screenings for ages 10 to 16 and enhanced dental care are also required.
These measures respond to rising obesity and myopia concerns, particularly among older children, despite recent declines in younger age groups.
