Armidale Airport replaced its cafe with vending machines on Jan. 5, 2026, after the business closed due to financial struggles and declining passenger traffic.
Armidale Airport has replaced its cafe, Alternate Root, with vending machines effective January 5, 2026, after the business closed due to financial unsustainability despite a $3,000 monthly subsidy.
The closure follows declining passenger numbers and the loss of Rex Airlines’ Sydney service in 2023.
The airport, ranked 38th among Australia’s top 50 by passenger volume, saw a slight drop in traffic from 8,500 in 2023 to 8,300 in February 2024.
Mayor Sam Coupland expressed regret and said the council is seeking new operators, with plans to discuss options at a February 18 meeting.
