After Maduro’s ouster, Cuba faces deeper crisis as lost aid worsens shortages.

Following the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel urged Cubans to make extreme sacrifices to defend the revolution and Venezuela. With Maduro now on trial in New York, Cuba has lost its primary international ally as well as a major source of fuel and financial assistance. The collapse of the decades-long support agreement, which exchanged Venezuelan resources for Cuban medical, educational, and security personnel, threatens to exacerbate Cuba's dire economic situation. Shortages of electricity, food, and medicine are expected to worsen, leaving the population with fewer resources and putting additional pressure on the already struggling regime.
