ONGC launched a carbon capture project in Gujarat to store 100 tons of CO2 daily in old oil wells, aiding India’s net zero goals.
ONGC has launched its first full-scale Carbon Capture and Storage pilot at Gujarat’s Gandhar oilfield, targeting 100 tonnes of CO2 storage daily in depleted onshore wells. The project captures emissions from nearby industrial sources and ONGC’s Hazira plant, injecting them underground to prevent atmospheric release while testing enhanced oil recovery. It leverages existing infrastructure and stable geology in depleted reservoirs, supporting India’s 2050 emissions reduction target and net zero goal by 2070. The initiative is part of a $12 billion decarbonization effort, with technical support from a CCUS consultant and potential collaboration with Shell. ONGC aims for net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2038.
