No Indian high court has appointed ad-hoc judges despite Supreme Court's 2025 ruling to ease case backlog.
Nearly a year after the Supreme Court allowed high courts to appoint up to 10% of their sanctioned strength in retired judges as ad-hoc judges to reduce a backlog of over 1.8 million criminal cases, no high court has submitted recommendations.
Despite constitutional provisions under Article 224A and judicial guidance, the Union Law Ministry has received no nominations from any of the 25 high court collegiums.
The process remains inactive, with no appointments made, even though the court relaxed earlier restrictions and mandated that ad-hoc judges sit on benches led by sitting judges.
