flag Myanmar's military-backed USDP wins most seats in first phase of disputed election.

Myanmar's military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has won the majority of seats in the first phase of the country’s three-part general election, securing 38 of 330 lower house seats and 88 of 102 contested seats, according to the Union Election Commission. The party, led by former general Khin Yi, claimed victories in 29 unopposed constituencies. Voter turnout was reported at 52%, though critics say the election lacks fairness due to the exclusion of major opposition parties, ongoing repression, and conflict in 65 townships. The military retains 25% of seats by constitution. Voting continues in two phases on January 11 and 25.
