A Memphis couple is charged with fraudulently taking a dead woman’s home using a false affidavit.
A Memphis couple, Shterrya Cooksey and Paul Dowdy, have been arrested and charged in connection with allegedly stealing a home from a deceased woman through a fraudulent property transfer.
The scam, uncovered in November 2025, involved a false affidavit claiming to be a child of the deceased, leading to a quitclaim deed transferring the property to Cooksey.
The case has drawn public outrage in South Memphis, prompting calls for stronger laws, including photo ID requirements for property transfers, as fraudulent transfers grow more common in urban areas.
Both suspects are in custody, with bonds set at $150,000 and $5,000 respectively.
The Shelby County Register’s Office and the Major Case Squad are involved in the ongoing investigation.
