India surpasses China as world’s top rice producer and launches 184 climate-resilient seed varieties to boost food security.
India has surpassed China as the world’s largest rice producer, with 150.18 million tonnes in 2025, and unveiled 184 new climate-resilient seed varieties across 25 crops, including rice, maize, pulses, and oilseeds, developed by ICAR and partners.
The seeds, designed for drought, flood, salinity, and pest resistance, are part of a broader push to boost food security, farmer income, and agricultural self-sufficiency.
The government aims to deliver these seeds to farmers within three years, with a focus on expanding pulses and oilseeds production.
