India launches ₹500 crore plan to cut medical device imports by boosting local production and testing.
India’s government has launched a ₹500 crore initiative to reduce its 70% reliance on imported medical devices, inviting proposals by January 10, 2026.
The scheme, announced in November 2024 by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, includes two parts: ₹180 crore in subsidies for up to 30 companies to produce essential components and raw materials, with support of 10–20% of project costs—up to ₹10 crore—reimbursable after spending; and ₹110 crore to fund clinical testing, offering up to ₹5 crore for patient trials, ₹2.5 crore for animal studies, and ₹1 crore for in-vitro diagnostic evaluations.
The effort aims to boost domestic manufacturing, ensure supply stability, lower costs, and promote innovation in healthcare technology.
