Increased rainfall boosts food in Tamil Nadu’s salt pans, drawing more migratory birds, signaling wetland recovery.
A surge in sightings of the Near Threatened Black-headed Ibis and other migratory birds, including Spoonbills and Oriental Darters, has been reported in Thoothukudi’s salt pans, Tamil Nadu, due to increased rainfall boosting food supplies.
The birds, migrating from Northwest Asia and Eastern Europe, are arriving in large numbers between September and April, signaling improved wetland health.
Similar increases have been seen at Chilika Lake in Odisha.
Conservationists view the trend as a positive sign of ecological recovery, though ongoing protection from pollution and development remains critical.
