A family stranded on I-35 in a blizzard found safety and warmth at a community shelter aided by locals.
A family traveling from New Hampton to Ames, Iowa, was stranded for over 24 hours on Interstate 35 during a sudden blizzard that caused whiteout conditions, jackknifed trucks, and closed the highway.
With fuel low and visibility near zero, they pulled over and were helped by a stranger who directed them to the Latimer Community Center, which had opened as a shelter.
Up to 60 people found refuge there, where local residents provided food, blankets, and toys, including from a nearby store that stayed open.
The family, initially anxious, described the experience as peaceful and even likened it to an adventure for their children.
They left the shelter around 11:30 a.m. Monday and returned home safely, expressing deep gratitude for the community’s kindness.
