Penev, named the best Bulgarian coach of the 20th Century, led Bulgaria to the semifinals before losing to Italy and then to Sweden for third place.
A legendary defender, he played 364 league games for CSKA Sofia, won 13 domestic titles, and earned 90 caps for Bulgaria across three World Cups.
He also coached CSKA Sofia, Al-Yarmouk, and Al-Nassr.
