A Bangladesh inquiry found most of 1,569 enforced disappearances under the Awami League were politically driven, implicating top officials and linking victims to opposition parties.
A Bangladesh inquiry commission has submitted a final report to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, concluding that the majority of 1,569 verified enforced disappearances during the former Awami League government were politically motivated.
The report, based on 1,913 complaints, found 75% of those who returned alive were affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, while 68% of the missing were linked to the BNP and allies.
Commission members estimated the true number of victims could be 4,000 to 6,000 due to underreporting.
Evidence pointed to involvement by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her defense adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, with some victims allegedly rendered to India.
Sites linked to extrajudicial killings include the Baleshwar and Buriganga rivers and Munshiganj.
Yunus called the findings historic, condemned the abuses as demonic, and urged public dissemination of the report, mapping of crime sites, and institutional reforms.
