Australia's lung screening program has detected thousands of early cancers in high-risk adults since 2023.
Since its July launch, Australia’s National Lung Cancer Screening Program has enrolled nearly 50,000 people aged 50 to 70 with a smoking history, offering free low-dose CT scans.
Over 5,000 have been diagnosed with lung cancer, including 10% with stage two to four disease and about 560 with advanced-stage cancer, all detected before symptoms appeared.
The program, backed by over $260 million, aims to improve survival rates—currently 27% at five years—by enabling early intervention.
It has also prompted behavior changes, such as smoking cessation, and is considered a global milestone in accessible, culturally safe screening.
