In northern China’s Inner Mongolia, extreme winter cold in Yakeshi has become a key economic driver, with the frozen Miandu River lake serving as China’s largest winter automotive testing site.
Since 2006, the location has drawn over 66,000 engineers annually, hosted more than 2,600 vehicle tests in 2024, and generated 179 million yuan in revenue, creating over 2,000 jobs and capturing 40% of China’s winter testing market.
Testing is limited to winter and kept outside protected zones, with revenue funding wetland restoration.
The industry has boosted local tourism, lodging, and agriculture, with visitor numbers up over 65% and tourism income up 46% in the past decade.
The Inner Mongolia Ice & Snow Festival, launched in December 2025, has further expanded winter tourism, contributing to a 25.76% increase in ticket sales from 13 theme parks between November 2024 and January 2025.
Officials credit the region’s cold climate and cultural assets for turning winter into a sustained economic opportunity.
