Ireland launches new marine accident unit for independent ship safety investigations.
Ireland has launched the Marine Accident Investigation Unit (MAIU), replacing the former Marine Casualty Investigation Board, to conduct permanent, independent investigations into marine accidents involving vessels in Irish waters and Irish-flagged ships worldwide.
Led by Chief Investigator David O’Driscoll, the MAIU operates under the Merchant Shipping (Investigation of Marine Accidents) Act 2025, which repeals prior laws.
The unit aims to enhance maritime safety through standardized, thorough inquiries similar to those in aviation and rail, and will handle all ongoing investigations.
Reports should be submitted to info@maiu.gov.ie or +353 1 6768139.
