Georgia finished modernizing its East-West rail line in January 2025, boosting speeds, capacity, and regional trade.
On January 3, 2025, Georgia completed the modernization of its East-West railway line, a critical part of the Middle Corridor linking Asia and Europe.
The project, led by China Railway 23rd Bureau and supported by international engineers, upgraded a challenging mountain route with new tunnels and bridges, including an 8.3-kilometer tunnel.
The line now supports passenger speeds up to 120 km/h and freight speeds of 80 km/h, cutting travel times by 40 to 50 minutes and increasing annual freight capacity from 27 million to nearly 48 million tons.
Over 1,000 Georgian workers gained skills and career advancement, with many rising to leadership roles.
Officials praised the project as a major step in strengthening regional connectivity and Georgia’s role as a logistics hub.
