Electric vehicle drivers in central London must now pay the congestion charge starting January 2, 2026, ending their previous exemption.
Starting January 2, 2026, electric vehicle drivers in central London must pay the congestion charge for the first time, as the full exemption for battery-powered EVs ended.
The daily fee increased from £15 to £18, with electric cars receiving a 25% discount and vans, HGVs, and quadricycles a 50% discount.
These discounts will decrease to 12.5% and 25% respectively by March 4, 2030.
The charge applies weekdays from 7am to 6pm and weekends/holidays from noon to 6pm.
Residents within the zone may still receive up to 90% off, but new residents after March 1, 2027, qualify only if they drive an EV.
The changes aim to manage traffic and support cleaner transport.
