DPP lawmaker Lin I-chin proposes renaming Taiwan’s cross-strait law to reflect two separate countries, amid political and external pressures.
DPP lawmaker Lin I-chin has proposed renaming Taiwan’s cross-strait relations law to reflect what she calls the reality of two separate countries, removing terms like “region” and “before national unification.” The move aims to clarify Taiwan’s sovereign identity and counter external pressures, amid legislative gridlock.
The KMT opposes the change, calling for the law’s abolition, while the executive branch declined to comment.
The proposal comes as Taiwan marked the New Year with celebrations and faced a magnitude 7.0 earthquake and Chinese military drills near its coast.
