A dog named Phoenix was rescued from thin ice in Rhode Island on New Year's Day 2026.

Firefighters in Westerly, Rhode Island, rescued a yellow Labrador named Phoenix after he fell through thin ice on a pond while walking with his owner. Responding to a call early Thursday morning, crews from the Misquamicut and Watch Hill fire departments used ice rescue suits to pull the dog from frigid, slushy water amid temperatures of 26°F and a wind chill of 14°F. Phoenix was calm and uninjured, later receiving extra food and rest. The fire departments called the rescue a successful first operation of the year and warned the public that no ice is safe, urging caution around frozen bodies of water.
