Colorado will replace failing avalanche systems on Loveland Pass this summer after repeated malfunctions.
The Colorado Department of Transportation will replace its Gazex avalanche systems on Loveland Pass due to repeated "catastrophic failures" that disable the systems, though they pose no public safety risk.
Three malfunctions since 2015, most recently in February, prompted a $2 million replacement project approved by the Transportation Commission.
The new system, possibly similar to those on I-70 and helicopter-deployed, will be installed this summer.
Current systems remain operational but are out of warranty.
No replacement plans were announced for other Gazex sites.
CDOT confirmed the public will not be impacted.
