Ontario invests $500M to revive Algoma Steel amid ongoing losses, tariffs, and job cuts.
Ontario plans to revive Algoma Steel with a $500 million investment in a new steel plate line and I-beam production, backed by federal and provincial support, to meet rising defence demand, including from the EU’s ReArm Europe initiative.
Despite receiving $500 million in aid, the mill has posted losses in every 2026 quarter, faces a 50% U.S. tariff that cut off its main market, and has already cut 1,000 jobs.
Analysts say building a domestic beam mill could boost profitability, but it would require $600 million and years to complete, with no official commitment yet.
The province also aims to expand local defence manufacturing and critical minerals processing.
