Ireland saw a 16% attendance spike in child welfare reports, prompting new measures after a missing student’s death.
Nearly 9,300 children were reported to Ireland’s child welfare agency Tusla in 2025 over school attendance concerns, a 16% rise from 2024 and more than a 30% increase since 2021-2022.
The spike follows the disappearance of Kyran Durnin, a student who had not attended school since 2022 and is now presumed dead.
In response, Tusla launched a Children Missing in Education team, an attendance campaign, and a five-year plan to reduce absenteeism by 2028.
Schools are required by law to report students missing 20 or more days.
