Ireland cancels €1.4B Sceirde Rocks offshore wind project due to financial and public challenges.
Ireland has withdrawn its €1.4 billion Sceirde Rocks offshore wind project off County Clare and Galway, ending a high-profile development that faced public opposition and financial setbacks.
The 30-turbine project, planned for waters 5 to 11.5 km offshore, was abandoned after the developer, Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta, forfeited a €35.4 million performance bond under the ORESS 1 scheme.
The decision followed a corporate restructuring by parent company Corio Generation, which shifted focus to a smaller global portfolio.
Despite the withdrawal, Ireland remains committed to its 5 GW offshore wind target by 2030, with the Tonn Nua project already awarded and three other sites under development.
