India’s vaccine exports to vulnerable nations, despite its own needs, earned global gratitude and showcased its global leadership during the pandemic.
In a January 2, 2026, speech at IIT Madras, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called the country’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution efforts the most emotionally impactful of his career, noting that recipients in small nations across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific often wept with gratitude.
Despite managing vaccine needs for its 1.4 billion people, India provided 100,000 to 200,000 doses to vulnerable countries, offering a lifeline when wealthier nations had stockpiled far more than needed.
Jaishankar described the shipments as acts of solidarity that saved lives and strengthened global unity, highlighting India’s role as a compassionate, responsible global actor during the pandemic.
