India upgraded Car Nicobar Air Base runway to boost eastern Indian Ocean air operations.
On January 2, 2026, India's Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan inaugurated a major upgrade to the runway at the Car Nicobar Air Base in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The 2.7-kilometer-long, 43-meter-wide runway, now resurfaced and expanded, enhances India’s ability to conduct long-range air operations in the eastern Indian Ocean.
The improvements include expanded apron areas and a taxi track that can serve as a secondary runway during emergencies.
The base, strategically located near the Malacca Strait, supports Su-30 MKI and Mirage fighter operations and boosts India’s deterrence, surveillance, and logistics capabilities in the Indo-Pacific.
The upgrade aligns with India’s 'Act East' policy and strengthens national security in a vital maritime corridor.
