India completes breakthrough on key tunnel for Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail, aided by Japan.
With the successful completion of Mountain Tunnel-5 in Palghar, Maharashtra, the first and longest of seven mountain tunnels on the 508-kilometer corridor, India has achieved a significant milestone in its Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project. With 326 kilometers of viaducts finished and 17 out of 25 river bridges completed, the 1.48-kilometer tunnel represents progress in overcoming difficult terrain. Using cutting-edge methods, a 2,780-ton steel bridge was recently launched in Bharuch in just 12 hours. With Japanese assistance, the project is being developed with the goal of reducing travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to approximately two hours when it is finished. Due to previous delays, it will have 12 stations and three depots.
