Humayun Kabir plans to rebuild the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad, drawing political backlash.
Jan Unnayan Party Chief Humayun Kabir announced plans to build a Babri Masjid, hospital, and university in Murshidabad, West Bengal, during a three-day event ending January 5, stating construction has begun and Friday prayers are underway.
He said people of all castes are participating and no one has been barred from contributing.
The move drew criticism from TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee, who accused Kabir—formerly of the BJP—of political opportunism, citing the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition and the timing of the announcement.
Banerjee questioned the motives behind the project, urging leaders to prioritize public welfare over religious symbolism.
The TMC had suspended Kabir after he made the announcement.
