Dame Karen Poutasi, New Zealand’s first female director-general of health, has died at 76.
She served as Director-General from 1995 to 2006, leading implementation of the Cartright Inquiry’s recommendations, guiding the HIV/AIDS response, and advancing primary care reforms.
She later led the New Zealand Qualifications Authority for 14 years and chaired Health New Zealand (Te Whatu Ora) from 2023 to 2024.
A respected public health leader, she was honored with a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2006 and elevated to Dame Companion in 2020.
Health Minister Simeon Brown paid tribute, expressing national condolences and recognizing her lasting impact on health and education.
