Assam’s new law grants land rights to 3.33 lakh tea workers’ families, with incentives at stake for estate owners who resist.
Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned tea estate owners that refusing to cooperate with a new law granting land rights to 3.33 lakh tea workers’ families could result in losing Rs 150 crore in annual government incentives.
The law, now in effect, allows workers in labour colonies to receive land pattas with sale restrictions for 20 years.
The government is reclaiming 218,553 bighas across 825 estates to settle families, calling it a correction of colonial-era injustices.
A housing scheme will launch in two months, and workers will receive an advance of Rs 8,000 by February.
A new monthly stipend scheme for graduates is also launching, while an 8th State Pay Commission will revise government salaries and pensions.
