Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democrat born in Uganda, will become New York City’s first Muslim, first South Asian, and first African-born mayor, taking office on January 1, 2026.
He will be sworn in at a midnight ceremony beneath City Hall using a centuries-old Quran from the Schomburg Center, marking the first time a New York mayor has used a religious text other than the Bible.
The Quran, acquired by Black Puerto Rican historian Arturo Schomburg, reflects the city’s diverse Muslim communities.
Mamdani, who campaigned on affordability and progressive policies, will also use family Qurans in a later public ceremony.
Although some conservative figures have criticized it, the event demonstrates the increasing representation in American politics.
