U.S. grants Serbia’s Pancevo refinery temporary operating relief until Jan. 23, 2026, to avoid fuel shortages.
The U.S. has granted a temporary reprieve to Serbia’s Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), allowing its Pancevo refinery to operate until January 23, 2026, after sanctions imposed in October halted operations and disrupted fuel supplies for about 80% of Serbia’s needs.
The refinery, 45% owned by sanctioned Russian firm Gazprom Neft, had shut down due to a crude oil shortage.
The exemption aims to prevent further economic and energy instability while negotiations continue over the Russian stake, with Hungary’s MOL involved and Prime Minister Viktor Orban mediating.
Serbian officials welcomed the move as critical for national energy security.
