Two babies, Cody Jaxon Pavy and Hallie Rose, became the first newborns in Newcastle, Australia, on January 1, 2026, born hours apart at different hospitals.
Cody, born at 5:26 a.m. at John Hunter Hospital, weighed 3.33 kg and was delivered via emergency C-section after a difficult labor.
His mother, Sammi-Jo Cvetanoski, said she was surprised to learn he was the first baby of the year.
Later that morning, Hallie Rose was born at 9:14 a.m. at Newcastle Private Hospital to first-time parents Tijana and Sam Reynolds, nine days early and weighing 4.26 kg, after her mother went into labor unexpectedly following Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks.
Both families expressed joy and gratitude for the births.
