Sarnia gave Scottsdale Aviation a 20-year no-cost lease at its airport, part of a deal to support the airport’s future under a new municipal services corporation.
Sarnia has approved a 20-year, no-cost lease for Clare Webb of Scottsdale Aviation to use a 200-square-metre workshop and adjacent land at the Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport, with a 10-year renewal option.
The deal, part of an amendment extending Scottsdale’s airport operations until mid-2027, supports the city’s planned transition to a municipal services corporation (MSC) to improve management and economic potential.
The airport has relied on city subsidies since 2021 after Air Canada ended commercial flights in 2020, and Webb stated Scottsdale has operated at no profit.
Council approved the agreement 6-3, with concerns over the lack of rent, while Webb expressed caution about the upcoming MSC shift.
The land is not designated for development in the city’s master plan.
