Northern Ireland sees 2,630 police attacks in a year, prompting calls to expand Taser use for officer safety.
A surge in attacks on police officers in Northern Ireland, with 2,630 incidents reported between October 2024 and September 2025, has prompted the Police Federation for Northern Ireland to call for wider Taser use.
PFNI chairman Liam Kelly cited a near-fatal knife attack in Derry and rising vehicle ramming attempts, arguing that Tasers offer a crucial non-lethal alternative to firearms and less-effective tools like batons.
Currently, only specially trained officers carry Tasers, and their use has declined to 19 incidents in 2024–25.
Kelly is advocating for a pilot program to equip frontline officers, pointing to Ireland’s Garda Síochána as a model, to improve officer safety and reduce injuries during violent encounters.
