Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves granted clemency to Maurice Taylor, releasing him after an illegal 20-year sentence, following a similar move for his brother Marcus.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves granted clemency to Maurice Taylor, who was serving a 20-year sentence for conspiracy to sell a Schedule III substance—more than three times the five-year legal maximum—weeks after doing the same for his brother Marcus Taylor, who received a 15-year illegal sentence.
Both men pleaded guilty in 2015 under plea bargains.
A Mississippi Court of Appeals initially ruled Marcus’s sentence illegal but did not order his release due to a missed deadline; after a rehearing, it reversed course and ordered his freedom.
Reeves acted after Maurice’s post-conviction counsel submitted new legal documentation, citing the injustice of prolonged illegal incarceration.
The governor stated that justice denied to one undermines justice for all.
Maurice must be released within five days.
The brothers are the only individuals to receive clemency from Reeves.
