Veteran Jamaican broadcaster and media pioneer Alma Mock Yen, 97, has died at her home following a period of illness, including a recent cancer diagnosis and stroke.
She was a trailblazer in Caribbean media and education, known for her work as a journalist, lecturer, and founder of the University of the West Indies’ Institute of Mass Communication.
Mock Yen trained generations of journalists at CARIMAC and was celebrated for her integrity, discipline, and commitment to excellence.
She also served as a parish councillor and was one of Jamaica’s youngest teachers, beginning at age 14.
Honored with the Musgrave Medal and Order of Distinction, she leaves a lasting legacy in media and public life.
