Indian authorities warn of rising WhatsApp scams with fake New Year messages containing malware that steals data and bypasses security.
As New Year 2026 approaches, Indian cybercrime authorities warn of a surge in WhatsApp scams using fake "Happy New Year" messages, gift offers, and promotional links.
These deceptive messages, often appearing to come from compromised contacts, contain malicious links or APK files that install spyware, enabling hackers to steal banking details, OTPs, photos, and hijack accounts.
The malware can bypass two-factor authentication, access device cameras and microphones, and spread to contacts.
Authorities urge users to avoid clicking unknown links, verify message sources, use official app stores, enable two-step verification, and report incidents immediately via 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
Las autoridades indias advierten del aumento de las estafas de WhatsApp con mensajes falsos de Año Nuevo que contienen malware que roba datos y elude la seguridad.
