India and Bangladesh began joint river monitoring to support renewal talks on the 1996 Ganges Water Sharing Treaty.
India and Bangladesh have started joint water measurements on the Ganga and Padma rivers as the 1996 Ganges Water Sharing Treaty nears its 30-year term.
Monitoring began at the Hardinge Bridge site on the Padma in Bangladesh and the Farakka point on the Ganga in India, with teams from both countries conducting readings every 10 days from January 1 to May 31.
The effort, aimed at ensuring transparency, involves Indian officials from the Central Water Commission and Bangladeshi representatives from the Water Development Board.
Both nations are already discussing the treaty’s renewal ahead of its December 2026 expiration.
