Francisco Escobar arrested for hit-and-run that killed 83-year-old Leonidas Smith on Dec. 28 in Union County.
Francisco Escobar, 37, of Oakboro, North Carolina, was arrested on December 31, 2025, and charged with felony hit-and-run and driving without a license in connection with the death of 83-year-old Leonidas Smith, who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run on Morgan Hill Road in Union County on December 28.
Authorities, including the Union County Sheriff’s Office, State Highway Patrol, and State Bureau of Investigation, conducted a two-day investigation using surveillance footage and door-to-door inquiries.
Escobar’s vehicle was seized, and Sheriff Eddie Cathey credited the arrest to coordinated law enforcement efforts.
The case remains under active investigation.
