David Heap, the English-born actor famed for his role as Donal Maher in the Irish soap opera Fair City and for his stage work, has died at 76.
Diagnosed with Corticobasal Syndrome in 2024, he passed away on December 30, 2025, at home, surrounded by loved ones, his wife Olwen Fouéré confirmed.
Heap, who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, rose to prominence in 1980 with the world premiere of Brian Friel’s Translations.
He became a respected figure in Ireland’s theatre scene, performing at the Abbey and Gate Theatres, and also appeared in Father Ted.
Tributes have been paid by RTÉ and colleagues, honoring his talent and legacy.
His funeral is set for January 2, 2025, in Dublin, followed by burial on Omey Island.
