Armed men abducted Nigeria's Oba Simeon Olaonipekun and his son on New Year’s Eve, leaving his wife wounded.
On December 31, 2026, armed gunmen abducted Oba Simeon Olaonipekun, traditional ruler of Aafin Community in Kwara State, and his son Olaolu during a New Year’s Eve attack on the royal palace.
The assault, involving around eight armed men who fired shots and broke in, left the Oba’s wife wounded and hospitalized.
The attackers, who spoke fluent English and targeted the royal family specifically, took the Oba and his son despite a small vigilante presence.
The incident follows a similar abduction in late November, where another monarch was freed after a ransom was paid.
Kwara State Police confirmed awareness and arrested three suspects nearby, recovering ammunition, but no updates have been released on the victims’ whereabouts or the investigation.
