USPS now postmarks mail based on processing date, risking late fees for time-sensitive items.
The U.S.
Postal Service changed its postmark policy effective December 24, 2025, now recording the date a letter is first processed by an automated sorting machine—often days after mailing—instead of the mailing date.
This shift may cause time-sensitive mail like tax returns or rent payments to be marked as late, even if sent before a deadline, potentially leading to fees.
The USPS advises sending important items early or visiting a post office for a hand-stamped postmark.
The update is part of broader 2026 changes, including shipping price increases starting January 18: Priority Mail up 6.6%, Priority Mail Express up 5.1%, USPS Ground Advantage up 7.8%, and Parcel Select up 6%.
Post offices are also being upgraded with 24/7 smart lockers, self-service kiosks, digital displays, and expanded government services.
USPS ahora marca el correo basado en la fecha de procesamiento, arriesgando tarifas por retraso para artículos sensibles al tiempo.
