UK triggers £25 cold weather payments for 18 northern England areas due to prolonged freezing temps.
The UK's Department for Work and Pensions has activated £25 Cold Weather Payments for 18 postcode areas in northern England, including parts of Cumbria, Northumberland, and the Scottish Borders, due to seven consecutive days of temperatures at or below 0°C.
Around 6,000 households receiving certain benefits will automatically receive the payments to help with heating costs.
The payments are not available in Scotland, where a separate annual Winter Heating Payment is provided.
Amber cold weather health alerts remain in effect for the North East and North West until January 5, with frost, snow, and icy conditions expected to persist into early January.
