A UK-funded project planted wildflowers across Cumbria to boost pollinators, reversing meadow loss and supporting biodiversity.
A conservation project in Cumbria, funded by broadband provider Fibrus with £150,000 from the UK government’s Project Gigabit, has created 15 wildflower habitats across West Cumbria, the Lake District, and surrounding areas over three years.
Hundreds of volunteers planted over 15,000 wildflower plants, distributed 2,000 seed packets, and scattered more than 50kg of seeds to restore pollinator habitats.
The effort aims to reverse the decline of native bees and butterflies, with early signs of success including increased sightings of the rare small blue butterfly.
The project addresses the loss of 97% of lowland meadows in the UK and supports biodiversity, food production, and community-led environmental stewardship.
