Texas Tech team finds 1720s Spanish mission site near historic Fort St. Louis in Texas.
A Texas Tech-led team has discovered the long-lost site of Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo in Jackson County, Texas, near the former French colony of Fort St. Louis.
Established in the 1720s by Spanish missionaries to convert the Karankawa people, the mission operated from about 1721 to 1726 before being abandoned.
Using ground-penetrating radar and excavation, researchers confirmed the site on private land, marking a major breakthrough in understanding Spanish colonization and indigenous history in Texas.
Further exploration is planned to fully uncover its significance.
