flag Protests spread across Iran over economic crisis and political demands, prompting government responses including bank closures and a new central bank chief.

Iran's protests, which started with shopkeepers in Tehran over economic hardship and grew as students joined nationwide demonstrations calling for political change, have spread to several cities. Basic goods became unaffordable as the rial fell to roughly 1.42 million per dollar, contributing to an annual inflation rate of 52%. Protesters chanted anti-regime slogans as demonstrations broke out at ten universities and in cities like Isfahan, Yazd, and Zanjan. In order to save energy during the bitter cold, President Masoud Pezeshkian announced temporary bank and school closures, called for communication, and replaced the governor of the central bank. Some stores closed in solidarity, and security personnel were called in. Although not as large as the protests in 2022, the unrest is a reflection of growing public dissatisfaction with long-standing Western and renewed UN sanctions related to Iran's nuclear program.
