North Carolina offers free radon test kits starting Jan. 1, 2026, to help households detect the cancer-causing gas.
Starting January 1, 2026, North Carolina residents can get free radon test kits through the NCDHHS website as part of National Radon Action Month.
Up to 8,000 kits will be available, one per household, to help detect radon—a colorless, odorless gas linked to lung cancer that causes about 21,000 U.S. deaths annually.
With 90% of counties having elevated levels, the state urges testing, as levels at or above 4 pCi/L are considered unsafe.
Resources, including multilingual materials and mitigation guidance, are available online.
