Libby Fletcher honored for leading efforts to improve Lake Tarawera’s water quality and secure $6.5M for a new sewer system.
Elizabeth “Libby” Fletcher has been awarded a King’s Service Medal in the 2026 New Year Honours for her decade-long advocacy for Lake Tarawera.
As chair of the Lake Tarawera Ratepayers’ Association from 2013 to 2024, she helped secure $6.5 million in funding for the Tarawera Sewerage Scheme, replacing septic tanks with a reticulated wastewater system for about 400 households.
Her efforts advanced water quality through volunteer conservation groups, university research, and collaboration with local iwi, councils, and government agencies.
Motivated by personal memories of the lake’s pristine state, she remains committed to long-term environmental protection through a 100-year land care plan and continues community service via the Laura Fergusson Trust Board.
