India proposes new rules to ease use of foreign SIMs in export-focused IoT devices.
India's telecom regulator TRAI has recommended a streamlined authorisation framework allowing Indian companies to use foreign SIM and eSIM cards in IoT and machine-to-machine devices meant for export.
The proposed "International M2M SIM Service Authorisation" would be issued online with a ₹5,000 fee, valid for 10 years, and require no minimum equity, net worth, or bank guarantee.
Foreign SIMs could be activated in India for up to six months for testing.
TRAI urged coordination with central ministries to create a unified regulatory framework for importing foreign SIMs for export devices and exporting Indian SIMs, aiming to boost India’s global competitiveness in connected technology and support the Make in India initiative.
